HEALTHY HABITS
Natural Science
Primary 5

Project Description:

  • Why is my Final Project useful or original?

Throughout my project I focus on using interactive means to educate the students on what it means to be healthy. I try to provide them with a useful framework for each of the different subtopics (diet, exercise, mental health, etc.). In order to be innovative and keep the students thoroughly engaged I have incorporated a few different delivery methods of information. At the same time, understanding that English is not their first language, it is important to remember that vocabulary and complex thinking must be kept simple enough for the Primary 5 level. This balance between exciting games/engaging tools with easy to understand material is where I have most tried to be original.

  • How are my materials effective?

I have harped on 4 main engaging/technological tools throughout my final project, those being, PowerPoint, Prezi, Kahoot, and Trivia. These varying ways of presenting information provide the students with different means of interaction that work to force critical thinking and encourage excited focus. Prezi for example, has allowed a presentation of information that is visually stimulating and more interactive than more basic presentation forms; whereas PowerPoint has allowed me to reiterate and emphasize important points with the help of stories, images, trivia, etc. Kahoot as well, has provided the students the opportunity to test their knowledge in a fun, possibly team oriented way.

  • How can your materials adapt to different levels or subject areas?

The nice thing about the materials and technological tools I've developed and selected is that they are highly adaptable to different levels of competence and subject areas. For example, my PowerPoint presentation on Healthy diet can be easily catered to different levels of English experience. The Power Point I made for "High Flyers" on developing habits is also catered to students that are fast learners and are above the Primary 5 level.

The Prezi presentations I made are designed to be even easier to understand, while still presenting challenges from a language and material standpoint. My Kahoots tend to varying levels as well, as some of them offer more clear and concise vocabulary and require less complex thinking, whereas others force more intuition and common sense. Furthermore, all of these materials include subject matter that is very adaptable to natural science, english, physical education, and even mathematics.

OUTLINE

Topic Description:

The topic of my final project is healthy habits within the subject of Natural Science.

Objectives:

The main objectives of my final project are to:

  • To reinforce and educate Primary 5 students on the importance of healthy habits as they relate to diet, physical exercise, sleep and rest, contact with nature, technology, and hygiene.

  • To engage students imagination when it comes to how they think about their own lifestyle and habits.

  • To inspire students to live healthier lives.

  • To continue to broaden their English vocabulary, pronunciation, and reading abilities.

  • To encourage students' critical thinking and self reflection.

Rundown of Materials:

The main materials utilized within my final project include Prezi, PowerPoint, and Kahoot. Also, within the classroom, the whiteboard will be used, and the students will have to use their natural science notebooks.

Timing and Time Frame:

Each individual presentation will be accompanied by its respective Kahoots (with respect to the specific topic). These will be given as individual lessons in Primary 5 Natural Science Class and possibly Primary 3 Natural Science Class. The duration of each individual lesson will be one hour. Due to the material's flexibility in student level, it is possible more lessons will be given using the same material to other grades.

Teacher's Role:

The teacher's role will be to assist myself with classroom management and any difficulties in language barriers that might need to be addressed because of a lack of understanding with regards to the English vocabulary. Of course, they will also be giving explanations and additional input to further the students' understanding of healthy habits.

My role as a Language Assistant:

My role has been to prepare material for the students that will help them to actively engage in important subject matter by using English. My role also consists of presenting the material in a fun and exciting way, managing the classroom, playing games with the students that assist their learning, and reinforcing their English language skills as I am giving the class.

Student Participation in this project and what it should look like:

The student's participation within this project should include:

  • Taking notes on the presentation

  • Reading out loud the material on the slides to reinforce pronunciation

  • Preparing questions and also asking questions as we go

  • Participating in the trivia games and the Kahoots

  • Following along with stretching exercises and other physical activities and games that will accompany each lesson.

Evaluations:

  1. The final project's effectiveness will be evaluated in two ways. The first will be based on the students' overall focus, as well as their ability to engage and understand the material. For instance, when I ask them questions or ask them to read and respond to information on the slides, it will be clear how much they are taking in. The second will be based on their retention of information regarding healthy habits. This will be clear based on their performance in the trivia games during the presentations, as well as the Kahoot quizzes after the presentations.

  2. The students themselves will be able to evaluate themselves based on how well they can answer trivia questions, engage and follow along in class, and ultimately enjoy the interactive learning experience.

How I will respond and have planned for learning style and level variation:

From my time at Colegio Publico Agustina Díez I have learned a lot about how different students learn differently, respond to varying stimuli differently, and also just have different levels of cognitive ability.

I have responded to these differences by making all of the material as clear as possible. Also, I have prepared material for varying levels of both English language proficiency as well as cognitive ability.

I will respond to these differences within the classroom by focusing on things everybody can work on, like pronunciation, understanding the main vocabulary. I will also be sure to get creative with how I present my material. For example, acting words out physically or even singing or drawing helps to ensure that everyone is following along because it gives less room for misinterpretation.
